Bacharach
Field Notes from Bacharach
Travelling down the Rhine was one of those things I’d always meant to get around to, ticking off the usual suspects along the way – castles, vineyards, the works. Bacharach really stood out though, one of those places that just makes you want to hang around for a bit. Ended up spending a few days there in July, mostly just trying to get a feel for the light and find some decent angles of the old town and the river.
You get a mix of conditions, from cloudy skies over the Furstenburg castle ruin to those golden hour sunsets that just do all the heavy lifting for you. Caught a few of those moments as the sun dipped, painting the whole valley in that warm glow, with Burg Pfalzgrafenstein sitting out on the water and Gutenfels up on the hill. The ancient architecture, the vineyards, the Rhine itself, it all just comes together.
It’s a place that’s seen a fair few sunsets, you reckon? Always something new to notice, even after a few days of wandering around with the camera.
