Living in Dubai meant plenty of weekend escapes, and Fossil Rock in Sharjah was always a good bet to clear the head. It’s one of those spots that just juts right out of the sand, with its ancient rock formations and whispers of old trading routes, a favourite for anyone looking to get out of the city for a bit.

I was often out there chasing that specific sunset shot, trying to get the sun to drop right into that saddle in the rock outcrop. It takes a fair bit of patience, and more than a few trips, battling the fast-changing light and the ever-present haze. This particular September evening, the sky put on a show of warm golds and oranges. While the sun didn't quite land perfectly, it caught the acacia trees throwing long shadows across the dunes, lines leading right towards those distant mountains as the heat finally began to drop. A nice quiet end to the day, before heading back, and a reminder that the unplanned shots are often the best ones.
