Lofoten
Field Notes from Lofoten
Travelling through Norway on a road trip in October, the Lofoten Islands really delivered on the promise of snow-capped peaks and still waters. You hear about these places, but seeing it for yourself is something else entirely. We were just cruising along, heading south through the islands, constantly pulling over for another vista – a quiet village tucked by a serene lake, an isolated church jutting into a fjord, or those clever arched bridges designed for fishing boats.
The light up there could be pretty dramatic; sometimes a sunburst would break through the clouds, other times the moody skies just added atmosphere to the rugged coastlines and old fisherman's huts. It wasn't always clear, but those clouds often made for a better shot, hitting the snow-dusted mountains and calm fjords just right. Every turn seemed to offer something new, making it pretty hard to drive past without grabbing a shot.
