Field Notes from Mull

Kicking off a Scotland road trip on Mull in July, we figured it was a decent spot to ease into things, and the island certainly delivered its usual dose of green and cloud cover. It's one of those places where you expect the weather to do its own thing, and often, those moody, atmospheric conditions just make for a better photo anyway. We spent a few nights based in Tobermory, which is exactly what you picture with its colourful waterfront cottages, and just headed out to see what we'd stumble across each day.

That's how we ended up exploring places like Eas Fors, spotting the falls from the harbour and deciding they were worth a closer look, or finding Croggin Pier with its dramatic skies. Even waiting for a boat to Staffa, the flat light around Mull harbour made the old boathouse and fishing cages really pop, almost asking to be shot in black and white to bring out all that texture. There's always a Highland cow somewhere, just getting on with its breakfast against a backdrop of hills and water, completely unfazed.

Whether it was smoothing out the cascades with a long exposure or catching the reflections in Tobermory, Mull just keeps pulling the camera out. It’s not about chasing perfect blue skies; it’s about what the island gives you, whatever the conditions.
