Field Notes from Northumberland

We ended up on a north-east England road trip, which turned into a bit of a last-minute thing when work back home slowed down. Northumberland felt like the right kind of place to explore, especially with that coastline always doing something interesting. We found ourselves out on the Farne Islands boat tour, where the weather was classic Northumberland – a bit grey and cloudy, but that just added to the mood, giving us cracking views of Bamburgh Castle from the sea and those stoic lighthouses.

It’s a place where you get a real sense of history, like the Longstone Lighthouse standing its ground since 1826, or the castles at Bamburgh and Lindisfarne. Crossing the causeway to Holy Island meant timing it right, but then you’ve got those upturned boat sheds by the water, which always make for a good foreground. Even down at Seaton Sluice, with the boats sitting on the muddy bed at low tide, or the misty pier at Amble, the conditions often just lean into the atmosphere, making it a spot that keeps pulling the camera back.
